Description

Information about the template:

PT Torpedo Boats were torpedo boats used by the US Navy during World War II. The designation PT stands for Patrol Torpedo. PT boats have achieved the greatest success especially in the Pacific Ocean. The main task of these small and cheap vessels was to fight against the surface vessels of the enemy, but they were also used for other tasks, for example shelling targets on the coast.

Standard armament originally consisted of four 533 mm Mark 8 torpedoes and two twin-barreled 12.7 mm M2 Browning machine guns. During the war, for example, 37 mm and 40 mm cannons, launchers for unguided rockets (usually caliber 114.3 mm and later also 127 mm), mortars and slides for depth charges were newly installed. Conversely, two of the four torpedo tubes were removed on many ships to make room for other armament. From the middle of 1943, 569 mm Bliss-Leavitt Mark 13 torpedoes began to appear on PT boats, which were not placed in torpedo tubes, but in holders, from where they were dropped into the water next to the boat.
